Industry Arts Showcase Event

The showcase took place at Play Resource in the Art Space, exhibiting artwork created by children from 13 different primary schools across Northern Ireland, to show their artwork created using waste from their local factories. The exhibition of work was the culmination of a 12-month eco-art scheme.

The showcase brings together the children, artists and local firms who worked in partnership on the Industry Arts Programme run by Play Resource over the last 12 months. The scheme involved 13 primary schools from all over Northern Ireland.

The showcase gave everyone involved the chance to see the results of its pilot scheme - the Industry Arts Programme. Primary schools across the province have been taking part in Belfast's first eco-art scheme working with local industries and Play Resource.

The Co-ordinator of Play Resource, Anne O'Donoghue said,
"This is a unique programme, where primary schools are involved in an arts project which partners them with a local firm to learn about waste management and the environment. Play Resource sends an artist to work with the children on an arts project using the waste materials of their local factory.

Through this project Play Resource are giving children the chance to learn about recycling and re-using waste materials - concepts at the heart of Belfast City Council's Reduce, Re-use and Recycle campaign.

The partnership offers companies, who are giving their waste materials to Play Resource, the chance to connect with their local community and consequently gain an insight into the valuable contribution they are making to the development of local communities, and understand the part they play in the social and educational development of children."

Judith Marrs from local firm, RFD Beaufort Ltd, who participated in the scheme said,

"It was amazing to see what the children produced - just using our waste, a little imagination and guidance from an artist. Showing the children round the factory, to see where the waste originated from, gave a real sense of how it all connects - and now we have a beautiful tree they created sitting in our reception!"
